The Power of Passion for a Goal

We can positively influence change by having passion for a goal.

Too many people find their work and personal lives unfulfilling because they fail to have clear goals. Fewer still can claim to live inspired lives because they lack the power of passion to achieve their goals.

We may work for different reasons.

You may know the story of the dog who chased, but failed to catch, the rabbit.

You see, while the dog was running for fun, the rabbit had a clear motive. He was running for his life and so was able to outrun his pursuer.

It’s the same with work and all the research shows that those who work for a deeper purpose than the money, or even the social contact, are the most inspired, successful and find the greatest sense of fulfilment.

Passion brings the colour into what you do and enables you to overcome all obstacles to your goal.

We can overcome FEAR – of failure, of others’ views or words and of being different.

Abraham Lincoln’s life appears to have been more of failure than success, ranging from personal tragedies, business failures and rejections in politics. But he appears to somehow have resisted the temptation of those 29 years to become bitter, resentful and discouraged. Maintaining his passion for the goal he was elected US President in 1860 and led the historic legislation to end slavery in his country.

We can overcome the effects of a bad start, of others’ low expectations and even of sensing the world is against us

“We all have dreams. In order to make dreams come into reality, it takes an awful lot of determination, dedication, self-discipline and effort." Jesse Owens

Jessie Owens similarly overcame these problems to become a champion athlete. His enduring passion to race and win enabled him to overcome the effect being born into a very poor family, of childhood illness and racial prejudice. He went on to the 1936 Berlin Olympics, where he competed against great athletes. His breathtaking performance in breaking five world records ridiculed the evil presumptions of the Nazis.

Yet when he got back to the US, while many people wanted to shake his hand, no one would offer him a job and he was still subject to the astonishing practice of segregating people by skin colour.

Your past cannot be changed, but you can change tomorrow by your actions today.

Here at Leadership International we have a clear sense of what we want to achieve and the energy and commitment to do it. We want to help others. We want to help you - whether it’s in your journey as a leader; as an influencer of change; as someone who wants to succeed in relationships, in business, in life.

Here are five steps to inspired living

  1. Get real about where you are today

  2. Ask, “What makes my life worth living?”

  3. Clarify your main goals

  4. Ask, “How does this fit with where I am today?”

  5. Take action – make a conscious commitment: today!
